Exodus 39: Description of High Priest Garments

Introduction: Exodus 39 is a journey of faith and fervor, it is a magnificent narrative about the manifestation of faith, obedience, and fervor towards God. This chapter outlines the construction of the high priest’s garments, the ephod, the breastplate, and other priestly attire. It emphasizes the meticulous obedience of the Israelites in following God’s instructions as given to Moses. This obedience is a reflection of their deep faith and a profound commitment to God’s commandments.

I. The Garments of Aaron (Exodus 39:1-7)

Exodus 39:1-7 provides a detailed description of the construction of the high priest’s garments. The Israelites used the finest materials and craftsmanship, honoring God’s instructions in Exodus 28:4-8. They designed the ephod with gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, symbolizing divine royalty and sovereignty (Revelation 1:13).

II. The Breastplate of Judgement (Exodus 39:8-21)

Exodus 39:8-21 describes the meticulous creation of the breastplate. It was embedded with twelve stones, each representing a tribe of Israel (Exodus 28:21). This symbolizes God’s enduring love for His chosen people. The Urim and Thummim, placed in the breastplate (Exodus 28:30), were to guide the Israelites, reflecting Proverbs 3:5-6’s encouragement to trust in the Lord for guidance.

III. The Robe of the Ephod (Exodus 39:22-26)

The robe of the ephod, as described in Exodus 39:22-26, was made from blue cloth, signifying heavenly grace. Its hem was adorned with bells and pomegranates, symbolizing holiness and fruitfulness (Exodus 28:33-34). The sound of the bells would remind the Israelites of Aaron’s holy service to God (Hebrews 9:6).

IV. The Turban, the Crown, and Other Priestly Garments (Exodus 39:27-31)

These verses depict the crafting of the turban, the crown, and other garments for Aaron’s sons. The crown bore an inscription, “Holy to the Lord”(Exodus 39:30), which is a reminder of the call to holiness reiterated in 1 Peter 1:15-16.

V. Presentation of the Priestly Garments (Exodus 39:32-43)

Moses inspected the work, and it was in accordance with God’s command (Exodus 39:32-43), fulfilling the obedience to God’s commandments as encouraged in Deuteronomy 12:32. Moses then blessed the Israelites, a tradition that underscores the importance of spiritual leadership blessing the congregation (Numbers 6:23-27).

Conclusion: Exodus 39 presents a vivid image of meticulous obedience, faith, and fervor towards God. The Israelites’ commitment to God’s commands in crafting the priestly garments reflects their profound dedication. This chapter underscores the significance of obedience to God’s word, a principle that should inspire every believer’s journey of faith. It calls for reverence for God’s commands, reminding believers of the divine call to holiness and total commitment to God’s work. Exodus 39 therefore presents a model for believers to follow, encouraging them to live a life of faith, fervor, and obedience.

The Nicolaitans were a group mentioned in the book of Revelation in the New Testament, specifically in Revelation 2:6, 2:15. They were a heretical sect in the early Christian church that was condemned by Jesus in his messages to the churches of Ephesus and Pergamum. The exact beliefs and practices of the Nicolaitans are not clearly described in the Bible, but early church leaders such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria suggested that they promoted sexual immorality and the consumption of food sacrificed to idols. Some scholars believe that the Nicolaitans were followers of a false teacher named Nicolas, who may have been one of the original seven deacons appointed by the apostles in Acts 6:5. However, the exact identity and teachings of the Nicolaitans remain a matter of debate among theologians and historians.
