Zechariah 3: Vision of Joshua the High Priest

Read Zechariah chapter 3

Introduction: The book of Zechariah is a prophetic book that was written to encourage the returned exiles in Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and restore their relationship with God. In Zechariah 3, we see a vision of the high priest Joshua standing before the Angel of the Lord, with Satan accusing him. This chapter is a wonderful depiction of God’s grace, forgiveness, and the promise of a coming Messiah. Through the biblical outline of Zechariah 3, we will seek to uncover the importance of this vision and look for truths that will help us today in our world.

I. Zechariah 3:1-2 – The Accusation of Joshua
In these verses, we see Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. The Lord rebukes Satan, proclaiming that Joshua is a “brand plucked from the fire.” This description is reminiscent of Isaiah 43:2, which speaks of God’s protection in the midst of trials. The Lord’s defense of Joshua is a testament to His mercy and grace, showing that even though we may be accused, God is our advocate.

II. Zechariah 3:3-5 – The Cleansing of Joshua
Joshua is described as wearing filthy garments, symbolizing the sin and impurity of the people. The Angel of the Lord commands that Joshua’s filthy clothes be removed and replaced with clean, rich garments, signifying the forgiveness and restoration that comes from God. This act of cleansing is presented in Isaiah 61:10, which speaks of being clothed in garments of salvation. The replacement of Joshua’s turban, a symbol of his priestly authority, further emphasizes the restoration of his position before God.

III. Zechariah 3:6-7 – The Charge to Joshua
The Angel of the Lord gives Joshua a charge to walk in God’s ways and keep His commandments. If he obeys, Joshua is promised a place of authority and access among those who stand before the Lord. This promise is somewhat like the assurance given in James 4:8, which encourages us to draw near to God, and He will draw near to us. Joshua’s obedience would not only benefit him but also the entire nation, as he represented the people before God.

IV. Zechariah 3:8-10 – The Promise of the Branch
The Lord gives a prophetic message about the coming of “My servant the Branch,” a reference to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This promise is confirmed in Jeremiah 23:5, which speaks of a righteous Branch from David’s line. The removal of the iniquity of the land in a single day points to Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross, as described in Hebrews 10:10. The vision ends with a picture of peace and prosperity, symbolized by the invitation for everyone to sit under their own vine and fig tree, a reference to Micah 4:4.

Conclusion: Zechariah 3 is a chapter that sheds light on God’s redemptive work and the promise of the coming Messiah. Through the vision of Joshua the high priest, we are reminded of God’s grace in forgiving our sins and restoring us to a right relationship with Him. The chapter also points to the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ, the Branch, who would remove our iniquity and restore the relationship between God and man, so humanity can have peace and fellowship with God. As believers, we can take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus is our redeemer, defender, our cleanser, and our restorer, and that through Christ, we have the hope of eternal life, which is in itself the greatest hope.
