Introduction: In Micah 3, the prophet talks about the unrighteous leaders of Israel, condemning their actions and warning them of the consequences of their behavior. This chapter is a call to repent, and a reminder of the power of God’s justice. As we get into the text of Micah 3, we will see the this message from Micah speaks of the times it was written and how relates to believers in our world today.
I. Micah 3:1-4 – The Indictment of Israel’s Leaders
Micah begins this chapter by addressing the leaders of Israel, calling them to account for their actions. He accuses them of hating good and loving evil, of tearing the skin off the people and the flesh off their bones (Micah 3:2). This bold imagery speaks to the exploitation and oppression that the leaders were inflicting on the people. Micah warns that when these leaders cry out to the Lord, He will not answer them because of their wickedness (Micah 3:4). This reminds us of Proverbs 28:9, which states that “If one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.”
II. Micah 3:5-8 – The Condemnation of False Prophets
Micah continues by condemning the false prophets who were leading the people astray. These prophets were more interested in personal gain than in speaking the truth, and they were giving the people a false sense of security (Micah 3:5). The prophet declares that because of their actions, they will be left in darkness and without a vision from the Lord (Micah 3:6). This is a warning that echoes the words of Jeremiah 23:16, which cautions against listening to prophets who speak visions from their own minds and not from the Lord.
III. Micah 3:9-12 – The Judgment of Jerusalem
In the final verses of this chapter, Micah turns his attention to the leaders of Jerusalem, accusing them of building the city on bloodshed and injustice (Micah 3:10). He warns that because of their actions, the city will be destroyed and become a heap of ruins (Micah 3:12). This prophecy is reminiscent of the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:37-38, where He laments over Jerusalem and foretells its destruction because of the rejection of the prophets and the killing of those sent by God.
Conclusion: Micah 3 is an indictment of the leaders of Israel and a warning of the consequences of their actions. Micah’s message from God is clear: God will not tolerate injustice and oppression, and those who engage in such behavior will face His judgment. This chapter teaches us the valuable lesson that we must live with integrity and righteousness, and that we must be willing to speak out against injustice and corruption. As followers of Christ, we are called to be a light in the world, to seek justice, and to love mercy (Micah 6:8). Let us heed the message of Micah and strive to live lives that honor God and reflect His love and justice to the world, you may be the only Jesus somebody you come across in life sees!
