Let Us go Into the House of the Lord: Psalm 122

Introduction: Psalm 122 is one of the songs of ascent, a beautiful hymn of celebration, unity, and peace. It was probably sang or chanted by those who traveled to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. This Psalm highlights the joy of going to the house of the Lord, the beauty of unity among the people, the importance of praying for peace, and the obligation of loyalty to the house of God.

I. Psalm 122:1 – The Joy in Going to the House of the Lord
This verse expresses the Psalmist’s delight in the invitation to the house of God. This joyful anticipation can be seen mirrored in Psalm 84:2, where the Psalmist expresses a longing and yearning for the courts of the Lord. In Luke 24:53, the disciples were also continually in the temple praising and blessing God after the ascension of Jesus. Just like the Psalmist, they found joy in being in God’s house. Hebrews 10:25 also encourages us not to neglect meeting together, emphasizing the importance of fellowship as a source of joy.

II. Psalm 122:2-5 – The Beauty of Unity among God’s People
These verses describe the unity of the Israelites as they stand together within the walls of Jerusalem. This unity is a central theme in Scripture. Ephesians 4:3-6 appeals to believers to maintain unity in the Spirit. Also, in John 17:21-23, Jesus prayed for unity among His followers. In Acts 2:1, the Holy Spirit descended when the disciples were all together in one place, again underlining the beauty and power of unity.

III. Psalm 122:6-9 – The Importance of Praying for Peace
The Psalmist exhorts us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. This call to prayer is not just for Jerusalem but can extend to wherever we live. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes praying for peace. In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul urges believers to pray for all people, including kings and those in authority, so that we might live peaceful and quiet lives. Jesus Himself, in Matthew 5:9, blessed the peacemakers. Moreover, in Romans 12:18, Paul instructed believers to live peaceably with everyone.

IV. Psalm 122:9 – The Call to Loyalty to God’s House
The Psalmist concludes with a declaration of loyalty to God’s house. This commitment to God’s house is reminiscent of Joshua’s declaration in Joshua 24:15 to serve the Lord. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus urges His followers to seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness. In Colossians 3:1, Paul encourages believers to set their hearts on things above.

Conclusion: Psalm 122 indeed is a beautiful hymn of celebration filled with deep insightful truths. The Psalmist invites us to experience the joy of going to the house of the Lord, to appreciate the beauty of unity among God’s people, to understand the importance of praying for peace, and to take up the duty of loyalty to God’s house. This Psalm encourages us to yearn for God’s presence, to strive for unity, to pray for peace, and to prioritize God’s kingdom. It directs our hearts towards the beauty of dwelling in God’s house and participating in His divine community.
