Introduction: The 7th chapter of 1 Chronicles is an extensive genealogy that traces the lineage of specific tribes of Israel – Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher. It not only offers a detailed account of the descendants of the tribes, but it also brings to light their vast numbers and the significance they held in the family of Israel. This chapter, though primarily genealogical, unveils greatness in the form of obedience, faithfulness, and the blessings of a multiplied lineage.
I. The Tribe of Issachar (1 Chronicles 7:1-5)
The initial verses of this chapter recount the lineage of Issachar. The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron. It is stated that the descendants of Tola were mighty warriors in their generations, numbering in the tens of thousands. This reflects the blessings of Genesis 49:14-15, where Jacob prophesied that Issachar would be a strong donkey, lying down between the sheepfolds. Similarly, Deuteronomy 33:18-19 prophesied that Issachar, along with Zebulun, would rejoice in their journeys and their tents. The obedience and faithfulness of the tribe of Issachar resulted in them being blessed with a mighty and numerous lineage.
II. The Tribe of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:6-12)
Next, the lineage of Benjamin is described. The tribe of Benjamin was notably smaller than other tribes, a result of their near-destruction for their transgression during the incident of the concubine in Gibeah (Judges 19:20-30). Nonetheless, they recovered and grew in strength, as evidenced by their representation in the genealogy listed here. In Genesis 49:27, Jacob prophesied that Benjamin would raven like a wolf, both devouring his prey and dividing the spoil. This prophecy becomes a reality as we see the tribe of Benjamin growing in strength.
III. The Tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim (1 Chronicles 7:14-29)
The genealogy then moves to the sons of Joseph – Manasseh and Ephraim. These half-tribes held a significant place in Israel, as prophesied by Jacob in Genesis 48:15-20, where he blessed the younger Ephraim over the older Manasseh, a blessing that was upheld as we see in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 7. The faithfulness of Joseph is reflected in the greatness and numbers of his descendants.
IV. The Tribe of Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30-40)
The final portion of this chapter covers the lineage of Asher. The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. The tribe of Asher was blessed with numerous and mighty descendants. This mirrors the blessings spoken by Jacob in Genesis 49:20 and Moses in Deuteronomy 33:24-25, where Asher was promised a life blessed with prosperity, strength, and favor with his brothers.
Conclusion: 1 Chronicles 7, while seemingly mundane with its long lists of names, reveals the mighty hand of God at work in the lives of His people. The faithfulness, obedience, and blessings of these tribes unfold as we see their lineages multiply and their influence grow. It serves as a reminder that God’s promises are true and His faithfulness is enduring, and that in Him, even the ordinary can unveil greatness. Through their obedience and faithfulness, these tribes were blessed with a lineage that left a lasting impact, reminding us of the timeless truth in the words of Proverbs 10:22, “The blessing of the LORD, it makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.”
