Sermon Outline Title: In That Day
Text: Matthew 7:21-27
Theme: The certainty of judgment and the necessity of obedience.
Big Idea: Eternity hinges on whether we truly followed Christ or merely claimed to know Him.
I. “In That Day” Is Certain (Matthew 7:22)
a. Jesus speaks of a real, personal day when every individual stands before Him.
b. Life’s distractions dull our awareness of judgment, but that day cannot be avoided.
c. In that moment, only one question matters: did I live for Christ or for myself?
II. Everyone Will Call Him Lord (Matthew 7:22-23)
a. Every tongue will confess His authority, whether they acknowledged it in life or not.
b. Belief delayed until judgment brings no salvation—today is the day of decision.
c. Casual belief without faithful following leads to eternal loss.
III. Works Alone Will Not Save (Matthew 7:22)
a. Many will point to religious activity, ministry, and good deeds.
b. True followers serve quietly for God’s glory, not personal recognition.
c. God records obedience done from a surrendered heart, not self-promotion.
IV. Hearers vs. Doers of the Word (Matthew 7:24-27)
a. Claiming Christianity is easy; following Christ requires obedience and sacrifice.
b. Building on Christ means living out His Word, not merely knowing it.
c. When judgment comes like a storm, only lives founded on Christ will stand.

Illustration / Example
Many know the way, speak the language, and go through the motions—but never walk the path. Knowing truth without obedience is spiritual self-deception. Followers of Christ will walk the walk whether they talk the talk or not.

Conclusion / Invitation
Jesus spoke the words, “in that day” in Matthew 7:22 referring to the time we all stand before him to give an account of our lives. Titles, words, claims and excuses will not matter—only a life surrendered to Christ. Choose today to be a doer of the Word, not a hearer only.
