Finding Your Pot of Gold

Sermon Outline Title: Is Jesus Enough For Inner Joy, Peace, & Contentment

Text, Theme, Big Idea
Text: 1 Timothy 6:6-8

Theme: The priceless value of godliness with contentment
Big Idea: True contentment comes only from Christ—not from possessions, pleasure, or worldly pursuits.

1. Contentment Is a Spiritual Treasure
a. Godliness with contentment is presented as “great gain”—a spiritual wealth far greater than anything money can buy.
b. Like the man who found the pearl of great price, true inward peace is worth more than houses, lands, toys, or treasures.
c. When a believer becomes satisfied in Christ, the devil loses his leverage to rob them of joy and peace.

2. The World Cannot Satisfy the Soul
a. People chase contentment through material things, sinful pleasures, entertainment, and constant buying—but the emptiness remains.
b. The “old-time religion” satisfies because it gives what the world cannot: peace with God, purpose in life, rest for the soul, and hope for eternity.
c. Contentment grows when we accept that this world is not our home and Jesus—not stuff—is our portion.

3. Contentment Must Be Learned Through Christ
a. Paul said he “learned” contentment—whether in abundance or in lack—because he fixed his confidence in Christ alone.
b. Contentment isn’t based on circumstances but on where your eyes and heart are focused.
c. “I can do all things through Christ” means Christ empowers the believer to remain steady, joyful, and satisfied in all seasons.

4. The Strength of Christ Produces True Contentment (Philippians 4:10-13)
a. Paul stayed steady in every circumstance because he kept his eyes on Jesus.
b. Contentment came from Christ—not from comfort, wealth, or surroundings.
c. A believer loses peace the moment they look away from Jesus and toward the world.

Contentment with Godliness is great gain.

Illustration / Example
An Amish man watches his neighbor move in fancy furniture, electronics, vehicles, and expensive possessions. When the man seems to have everything, the Amish man says, “If you ever think you’re lacking anything, let me know—I can show you how to live without it.”
A powerful reminder: contentment isn’t about what you have, but Who holds your heart.

Conclusion / Invitation
If everything you owned disappeared—money, job, hobbies, vehicles, electronics, vacations, extras—what kind of Christian would you be?
Could you be content with only Christ?
Would His promises be enough?
Jesus asks each of us: Am I enough without the things I’ve given you?
If not—today is a day to lay aside the clutter, renew your walk, and find your true contentment in Him.
